The Department of Toxicology was founded in July 2005. Toxicology is the key discipline of Jiangsu Province, which is also the national key discipline of labor health and Environmental health and an important component of the superior discipline of public health and preventive medicine in Jiangsu Province. The department is authorized for the master’s and doctorate programs in Hygienic Toxicology, which is an important part of the postdoctoral research mobile station of Public Health and Preventive Medicine and the first-level discipline doctoral program of Nanjing Medical University. Hygienic Toxicology is the key discipline of Jiangsu Province and national and provincial excellent course.

 

The department has a team of young and middle-aged teachers with high academic level, good study style, and reasonable structure. At present, there are 15 faculty members in the department, including 7 professors, 3 associate professors, 2 lecturers, 1 senior technician, and 2 Post-doctor fellows; 5 doctoral supervisors and 4 master supervisors; Most of the teachers have a doctor's degree and have studied abroad in well-known universities and research institutions or senior visiting scholar research experience. At present, there are 1 national famous teacher, 2 distinguished professors of Changjiang Scholars of the Ministry of Education, 1 winner of the National Youth One Hundred Thousand, 2 winners of the National Natural Science Foundation for Outstanding Youth Fund, 2 winners of the Jiangsu Outstanding Youth Fund, 2 young and middle-aged science and technology leaders of 333 High-level Talents Training Project in Jiangsu Province, 3 six peak talents in Jiangsu Province, 3 academic backbone and young academic leaders of universities in Jiangsu Province, 2 winners of Fok Ying Tung Young Teachers' Award of Ministry of Education, and 1 honorary president of National First-level Society (Chinese Toxicology Society), and 21 vice-chairmen/members of the National Second-class Society.

 

The department undertakes the teaching of toxicology and related courses and electives for undergraduate, master and doctoral students. The current courses mainly include toxicology, modern toxicology, environment and health, reproductive medicine, etc. Professors in the department edited the national textbooks, Basic Books of Toxicology (Fourth, fifth, and sixth edition) and Toxicology Experimental Methods and Technologies (first, second, and third editions); edited Basic Books of Toxicology and Case Edition (Second Edition), Comprehensive Experimental Course of Toxicology (First Test Edition) and Examination Guide for Basic Notes and Review of Toxicology (First edition); and Reproductive Health (First Edition). Toxicology is a national and Jiangsu Province quality course, a national quality resource sharing course, and Reproductive Medicine is a national demonstration open course. In the past five years, professors in the department have presided over several national and provincial educational reform projects, won 1 second prize of national teaching achievements, 2 special prizes and 1 first prize of higher education teaching achievements in Jiangsu Province, and published more than 20 papers on teaching reform. The supervised undergraduates have won 12 times of Jiangsu Province Outstanding Graduation Thesis (Group) Award, more than 10 undergraduate/graduate innovation projects in Jiangsu Province, and the second prize of the 17th Challenge Cup National College Students Extracurricular Academic Science and Technology Works Competition.

 

Department relying on the Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Modern Toxicology, State Key Laboratory of Reproductive Medicine, and Environmental and Human Health International Joint Research Platform, has established the reproductive toxicology, environmental toxicology and chemical carcinogenic, reproductive and developmental toxicology, endocrine toxicology and neurotoxicology five laboratories. In recent five years, it has undertaken more than 60 national and provincial research projects such as the Ministry of Science and Technology Support Program, and National Natural Science Foundation, with a total expenditure of more than 20 million yuan, and published more than 250 SCI papers on the foundation, won more than 10 national invention patents, won 1 second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award, Natural Science Award for science research award, Jiangsu Province Science and Technology Award and more than 10 national and provincial achievement awards. Pharmacology and Toxicology at Nanjing Medical University entered the top 1‰ of ESI.

 

The department implements the idea of teaching and educating people in the whole process of talent training, and pays attention to cultivating students' innovative thinking and practical ability. The department recruits 5-6 doctoral students in toxicology and labor health and environmental health, more than 20 master's students, and more than 10 master of public health (MPH) every year. In the past five years, professors in the department have trained more than 10 postdocs, more than 30 doctoral students in toxicology, more than 90 master’s students, and more than 30 MPH graduate students. It has won 6 Jiangsu Provincial excellent doctoral papers, 5 excellent master papers, and more than 10 outstanding thesis awards in international and national academic conferences; 12 guided undergraduate students have won Jiangsu Provincial excellent graduation thesis (group) awards; and more than 10 undergraduate/graduate innovation projects in Jiangsu Province. The Department was awarded the advanced collective of three education of Nanjing Medical University in 2013 and the title of Jiangsu Province Workers' Pioneer in 2015.
